Whether you’re looking for a new watering hole or you’re heading to the city from Waterlooville or Fareham on a special occasion, we’ve picked 10 of the best pubs to grab a drink (or two!) in and around town.

Located just off Bedford Place, Revolution is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. Contemporary features and a stylish sky bar, complemented by hand-crafted cocktails and a fine-tasting menu to die for, make this place a must-go. Enjoy a raspberry mojito or an espresso martini or share a Rockstar Mar-Tree-Ni with your friends.

London Road Brew House

Also found off Bedford Place, this buzzy pub has a lot to keep you entertained. From state-of-the-art cocktails and tasty nibbles to quiz nights and ping pong wild competitions – good fun abounds at the London Road Brew House. You can even have a look at the dishes’ preparation yourself thanks to their incredible open kitchen.

The Black Phoenix Pub

This is THE traditional pub. Just a short walk from Southampton train station, the Black Phoenix offers some of England’s most known classics in a warm, relaxed and welcoming environment. The Swanson, the Hot One and the Peppa burgers are three must-try, topped with a side of onion rings or grilled halloumi. All this with a fresh, crispy IPA.

The Mitre

Real ales, great classics and a relaxed atmosphere. What more do you need from a pub? Despite being located a little outside of the city centre, in Portswood, the Mitre is worth a visit. If you’re in a hurry, there are plenty of quick eat on the menu - from topped chips cheese & gravy to breaded garlic mushrooms and chicken nuggets. And if you’re bringing your family along, make sure you try the tasty beef lasagna.

Dancing Man Brewery

When we talk about brews, there is one place that springs to the mind: the Dancing Man Brewery. Set in the Wool House, this rustic, warm pub offers its guests a convivial atmosphere where to enjoy hand-crafted beers and ales to suit all tastes. Some of the recipes go back to the very beginning, while others have been introduced later to complement the menu. Try one of the blue moons – a space for experimental ideas – and top it up with a Moving Mountains burger or the classic roasted cod.

The Brewdog

Looking for a pizza place and home-brewed beers? You’ve come to the right place. At the Brewdog, just off Upper Bannister Street, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Try one of their properly Italian-inspired pizzas – from the vegetarian Grazing Goat to the Salami Origani. Worry not if pizza is not up your street, as the Brewdog’s menu includes plenty of other delicacies. Choose between Buffalo chicken wings and Buffalo cauliflower while drinking a cold lager or a crispy IPA.

The Juniper Berry

A traditional English pub, the Juniper Berry overlooks the new West Quay shopping centre and is located within the historic Old Walls of the city, where Jane Austen once lived. It was previously known as the Castle Tavern until 1993, which was changed to The Juniper Berry in April 2011. Today, the pub offers an impressive selection of real ales, ciders, spirits and wines, while you can also enjoy a game of snooker. And if you can’t get enough of it, you can also book one of the rooms upstairs.

The Humby Plums

Located on the eastern banks of the River Itchen, the Humbly Plums is a contemporary rural pub on the edge of Bitterne Village. Delicious food and a wide range of beers are offered here, as well as a Quiz Night Monday and a Meat Draw Friday.

Frog & Frigate

This pub encloses Southampton’s spirit to the fullest. Located by the marina, The Frog & Frigate offers a mix of old and new, modernity and tradition. Its fresh, yet classic dishes are complemented with a rich variety of ales to satisfy every palate. From old oak floors to ship’s wheels, lanterns and pirate murals on the wall – enjoy a distinctive taste of Southampton.

The Bedford

Right in the heart of the action lies the Bedford, one of the very best pubs within the Southampton area. Tasty sharers, all you can eat wings, treat yourself Tuesday and you name it – a visit to the Bedford is simply a must.
