The Glenbervie
Built by Imagination

David Wilson Homes is searching for Scotland's most imaginative young designer, and the competition is open to primary school pupil across the country.

Built by Imagination is a nationwide initiative inviting children aged five to 12 to redesign a room inside one of our 4-bedroom family homes.

The brief is simple: take the flexible dining room or study space inside our Glenbervie housetype and turn it into whatever you can dream up. A home cinema, a science lab, an art studio, a playroom. There are no wrong answers.

How it works

Entries are open across two age categories: five to eight years, and nine to 12 years. Judging is based on creativity and originality, not artistic ability, so every child starts on equal footing.

To enter, children complete their design, photograph it, and submit it alongside a short description explaining their vision. Floorplans are available for inspiration.

Three regional winners total are selected from across North Scotland, West Scotland and East Scotland, each receiving a £50 Smyths Toys voucher. The overall winner receives an additional £100 voucher.

Meet the lead judge

Alison Condie, Managing Director of David Wilson Homes Scotland, leads the judging panel. As the former technical director who oversaw the architectural, engineering and design processes behind new homes, she brings fantastic experience to the competition.

She said: “Every David Wilson home is built around how families live, and that means giving them space that can grow and change with them. Built by Imagination puts that idea directly into the hands of children, who have a unique and instinctive sense of what makes a house feel like home.

“This is an invitation to Scotland's young designers to show us what they would do with a room of their own. We expect the entries will tell us a great deal about what a family home really means to the next generation, and may even inspire some of our future home designs.”
