Moving Day Top Tips and Advice

Oct 12, 2023
Moving day
Moving day is exciting, and you deserve to enjoy it fully. However, it can also be stressful, with many things to unpack and arrange. That's why we’ve put together some useful tips to help you get organised, from making a to-do list to creating a comfortable space for your kids.

Top moving house tips

Below, we’ve listed some of our top moving house tips to help you make the most of moving day. These include:

  • Make a to-do list
  • Pack the last few things
  • Keep the essentials with you
  • Check your utility meters
  • Create a space for pets and kids
  • Stock up on snacks
  • Have a walk around
  • Relax!

1. Make a to-do list

To-do lists are a great way to help you keep on top of things during your move. Note everything you need to do, whether unpacking boxes or sorting paperwork, and tick off each item as you complete it.

2. Pack the last few things

Most of your belongings will have been packed by now. If there’s anything left out, store it away with the rest of your things. Label each box and note if any boxes contain fragile or valuable objects.

If you've booked a removal company, line up your boxes at the door so they can load them quickly. We recommend checking that there's no damage to any items once you arrive in your new home.

3. Keep the essentials with you

Keep a box with the essentials aside, including basic cleaning supplies, important documents and some first night must-haves

4. Check your utility meters

Ensure you write down meter readings in your old and new home, including water, electricity and gas.

5. Create a space for pets and kids

Creating a comfortable space for your kids or pets is essential to help them settle in. Dedicate a room where they can play while you're arranging the new space.

6. Stock up on snacks

Moving day requires a lot of energy, so we recommend stocking up on snacks and drinking lots of water throughout the day.

7. Have a walk around

Enjoy a walk around your new home to get a feel for it and decide how to decorate it. This is a chance to check that everything is up to scratch and notify your solicitor if anything isn’t.

8. Relax!

Once you have finished unpacking, enjoy some well-deserved rest. Open a bottle of champagne and toast to a new beginning.
