New homes in Selby

Whether you’re exploring the medieval abbey, enjoying a meal in a local restaurant or rambling through the nearby countryside, there’s lots to see and do in the historic town of Selby. If you’re looking for a rural and charming place to live within commuting distance of Leeds, Wakefield and York, a new home in Selby could be exactly what you’re looking for.

A quick history

Selby is historically a market town, with origins stretching back to Anglo-Saxon times. In the 11th century French monks established an Abbey in Selby, and William the Conqueror’s son, who later became King Henry I, was also born in the town.

During the English Civil War, the Battle of Selby saw the Parliamentarians clash with the Royalists. Later in the 18th century, Selby was known for shipbuilding thanks to transportation via the River Ouse, and it also became a railway town. In the 1990s, it was home to one of the few remaining coal mines in the country.

Business and industry

Selby’s industry is rooted in shipbuilding and coal. Although both industries have now disappeared from the town, today Selby is home to a diverse range of businesses spanning retail, tourism and farming. Many people commute to work from Selby, with major employers including Asda, Optare, Jet2.com and Yorkshire Bank in Leeds, Reckitt and Sons, Rank Organisation and Seven Seas in Hull, and Aviva, NFU Mutual and the Crown Prosecution Service in York.

Things to do in the area

There’s lots to see and do close to your new home in Selby, whether you’re enjoying live music at Selby Town Hall, shopping until you drop at Abbey Walk Shopping Centre, or taking a walk through Selby Park. One of the most recognisable sights in Selby is the 900-year-old Abbey, which is unique for its combined Norman and Gothic styles.

If you want to take a day trip, York is only a short drive away from Selby where you’ll find York’s Chocolate Story, Jorvik Viking Centre, York Dungeon and York Castle Museum. Leeds is also a popular destination for days out from Selby, where you can enjoy some retail therapy at Trinity Leeds, uncover history at the Royal Armouries Museum, or take the kids to Tropical World.

For a relaxing round of golf on the weekend or a summer’s evening, Selby Golf Course is just a quick car journey from the town centre. Other attractions in the local area include Barlow Common Nature Reserve, Selby Leisure Centre and Summit Indoor Adventure, while the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the North York Moors and the Peak District National Park are only a short drive away.

Travel and commuting

Selby is well-connected to nearby towns and cities by both road and rail, ideal if you’re commuting to work or travelling to see friends and family. York is a 25-minute car journey or 30-minute train ride north of the town, while Leeds can be reached in 35 minutes by car or 25 minutes by train. Hull is only a 35-minute train journey from the town, or 45 minutes driving.

If you’re going to London, there’s a direct train from Selby to King’s Cross with a journey time of just two hours. When it’s time to get away from it all, Doncaster Sheffield Airport is only a 40-minute drive from the town, while Leeds Bradford Airport can be reached in around 50 minutes by car.
