Welcome to Hessle

Whether you’re visiting museums, enjoying a picnic in country parks or practising your swing at the local golf club, Hessle is home to lots of different sights and attractions. Located in the East Riding of Yorkshire on the banks of the Humber, the town is a short drive or train journey from the city of Hull, making it a popular commuter town.

A quick history

Hessle dates back to the sixth century, and during Saxon times it was a place of political importance. The town grew during the Medieval era, and gradually became linked with its larger neighbour, Hull. The Hessle Feast began in the 1800s, and is a tradition that continues annually to this day.

The history of Hessle history is closely tied to ship building, beginning with a shipyard that built wooden boats, progressing to steel and iron ships. Although the shipyard was closed in 1994, it’s now a multipurpose space for business and scrap metal.

The Humber Bridge was built in 1981, breaking the world record as the longest single-span suspension bridge at the time, and linking Hessle with Barton-upon-Humber.

Business and industry

Although industry in Hessle historically centres on agriculture and shipbuilding, today it’s home to a number of big employers across a wide range of industries including the manufacturing firm Fenner and safety supplier Arco. Pork producer Cranswick, communications provider KCOM Group, William Jackson Food Group and City Health Care Partnership are based in Hull.

Things to do in the area

Hessle centres around the town square, with shops, a bus station and the Grade I listed All Saints' Church. One of the most iconic sights in the town is the Humber Bridge, where you’ll find the 48 acre Humber Bridge Country Park.

For sports fans, KCOM Stadium is home to Hull City FC, while golf courses nearby include Hessle Golf Club, Hull Golf Club and Springhead Park Golf Course.

Neighbouring Hull has been named City of Culture 2017, where you’ll find lots of attractions including The Deep aquarium, Hull Ice Arena, Hull and East Riding Museum, Streetlife Museum of Transport and Ferens Art Gallery. In the Old Town, you can take a leisurely walk along the cobbled streets, look out for the ‘smallest window in England’ and enjoy a pint of real ale at one of the many pubs.

Travel and commuting

If you’re travelling to and from nearby towns and cities for work, Hessle has good transport links by road and rail, including direct trains to Hull and easy access to the M62. Central Hull is just seven minutes away from Hessle by train or 15 minutes by car, making the journey a popular commuter route.

Travelling further afield, the journey from Hessle to York takes one hour five minutes by car or just over 50 minutes by train, while Leeds can be reached in one hour by car or train with a change in Brough. Scunthorpe is a 30 minute drive from the town, while Grimsby is 35 minutes away via the Humber Bridge.

If you’re going on holiday or travelling abroad for business, Humberside Airport is a 20 minutes drive away.
