New Homes in the East of England

Welcome to the East of England

Whether you’re exploring the local countryside, browsing boutique shops or simply enjoying some family fun, the East of England is a diverse and exciting place to set up home. Encompassing the counties of Essex, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, BedfordshireSuffolk and Hertfordshire, the region is home to historic cities, vibrant towns and green landscapes. Ipswich, Luton, Cambridge, Norwich, Chelmsford and Colchester are all located in the East of England, so there’s plenty of choice when finding the home that suits your needs to a tee.

A quick history

The East of England was formed as a region in 1994, but the area’s history stretches back many, many centuries before that. The city of Cambridge was founded by the Danes in the 9th century, and a castle was built there by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, with the first of the city’s now world-famous university colleges being established during the Middle Ages. In East Anglia, the city of Norwich began life during Anglo-Saxon times, and quickly became one of England’s largest towns during Norman times.

Over the decades, there have been lots of discoveries in the East of England, including the Chorleywood bread process used to produce modern-day loaves, the very first fire extinguishers, gummed envelopes, and Britain’s first radio broadcast. During the Second World War, many towns and cities in the East of England were bombed by the German Luftwaffe, and had to be rebuilt from 1945 onwards. Norwich has also hosted two UK-firsts - postcodes in 1959, and pedestrianised streets in 1967.

Businesses and industry

Historically, the region’s industries included wool making, leather working and the making of scientific instruments. Nowadays, the East of England is home to a wide range of industries, ranging from agriculture to automotives, property and technology.

Some of the biggest employers in the local area are Aviva, Greene King, P&O Ferrymasters, East of England Co-operative Society and Robinsons Motor Group. Anglian Group, the Vindis Group, Bernard Matthews, Mclaren Construction Group, Hilton Food Group, Marshall of Cambridge and Easyjet are also based in the region.

Things to do in the area

There’s plenty to see and do in the local area, so you’ll never be short of inspiration for days out from your new home. If you enjoy exploring the great outdoors, go walking through the Norfolk Broads, visit Wilstone Reservoir Nature Reserve, or go biking along the Greenwood Cycle Trail. There are also lots of beaches to explore, from Holkham Bay to Dunwich and Thorpeness.

If you have children or grandchildren, they’ll love visiting Bewilderwood, Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach and Africa Alive! walking safari. Other places of interest in the East of England include Norwich Cathedral, Blickling Hall, Time and Tide Museum, Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon burial site, Framlingham Castle, Sandringham House and Colchester Zoo.

Travel and commuting

The East of England has good commuter links to the capital, so it’s a great place to live if you work in London but want to set up home outside of the city. Motorways in the region include the M1, M11 and M25, while major A roads connecting the towns to London include the A1, A11 and A12.

Direct railway lines run to London from towns and cities including Cambridge, Southend and Norwich. The train journey from Cambridge to London King’s Cross takes just 50 minutes, while the journey to the London Fenchurch Street from Southend-on-Sea also takes 50 minutes. For air travel, London Stansted, London Luton, London Southend and Norwich International are all located in the East of England, with domestic and international flights to Europe and the rest of the world.
