New homes in Wetherby

Welcome to Wetherby

Whether you’re relaxing in the town gardens or buying fresh produce at the Farmer’s Market, the West Yorkshire town of Wetherby is a charming, friendly place to live. If you’re commuting to YorkLeeds or Harrogate but want to be based in a more rural area, a new home in Wetherby could be the perfect choice for you.

A quick history

Bronze Age and Roman artefacts have been found by archaeologists in the local area, signifying there were very early settlements around Wetherby. There was once a castle in the town, but only the foundations are left as it was destroyed on the order of King Henry II, just 15 years after it was built in 1140.

Wetherby’s regular market dates all the way back to the 13th century when it was established by the Knights Templar. Following the Battle of Bannockburn in the early 14th century, the north of England was invaded by the Scots and many towns were raided and burned, including Wetherby.

In the 18th century Wetherby became a coaching town with many inns and alehouses for passers-by, and by the Victorian era the rural area began to industrialise. The town centre was rejuvenated from the 1970s onwards with a new pedestrianised high street and shopping centre.

Business and industry

Traditionally the economy in Wetherby centred on the cattle market, the town’s many inns and the mills, but over the course of the 20th century, these historic industries made way for other businesses including IT, food and business services.

Today Wetherby is home to a number of big companies including gravy-makers Goldenfry, packaging company inspirepac, and IT service and repair business, International Computer Connections. Tockwith Airfield, formerly RAF Marston Moor, is now used for driving tuition and partly as a business park.

Things to do in the area

Wetherby is a charming town with lots to see and do. When you first arrive, get to know your new home by going on the guided walks through the town, which include the Historical Town Trail, the Blue Plaque Trail and the Floral Town Trail. On your way around Wetherby, look out for the ‘Tardis’, a 1950s police box outside the police station.

As an historic market town, regular markets are a tradition that continues to this day. On a Thursday the Market Place is alive with stalls selling everything from fresh produce to arts and crafts, while the monthly Farmer’s Market is a great chance to buy award-winning produce from local sellers.

If you’re moving to a new home in Wetherby with children in tow, there are lots of great family-friendly days out in the local area including Stockeld Park, Knaresborough Castle and Roundhay Tropical World. Wetherby Arts Festival takes place each year, while regular meets are held at Wetherby Racecourse if you enjoy a flutter on the horses.
