New homes in Blackburn

Make the Move

Lying on the edge of the Ribble Valley, Blackburn is a large town in Lancashire.

A former mill town, textiles were produced in Blackburn from the mid-13th century, leaving the town with a rich history and heritage.

Now it’s very much a contemporary town and buying a new home in Blackburn will offer you great shopping, brilliant attractions and convenient transport links.

Things to see and do

Blackburn’s beautiful cathedral takes centre stage in the town. As one of Britain’s oldest places of Christian worship, organised tours of the building will allow you to learn all about its history, and as you walk through the town you can hear the ringing of the bells. Regular concerts performed by the six choirs are broadcast by the BBC and allow you to enjoy the surroundings of the building on TV.

For a further taste of the town’s history, the Blackburn Museum and Gallery showcases a fascinating selection of historical objects. From collections of beetles to medieval manuscripts, the museum is also home to the only permanent gallery of Indian and Pakistani culture in the North West. Unique courses can be attended at the museum such as ‘Beginners Taxidermy’.

Family attractions include Mrs. Dowson’s Ice cream – a dairy farm producing ice cream from its very own cows. Children will be given the opportunity to see, touch and handle the farm animals and learn about the ice cream making process.

Blackburn plays host to many great events such as the Blackburn Canal Festival in July on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and Blackburn Heritage Festival, held in September. Both offer a brilliant family day out and celebrate Blackburn’s history.

Shopaholics won’t be disappointed as the Mall offers all your high street favourites while the new Blackburn Market is traditional with a fashionable twist. Offering a juice bar, exhibition space, live demos and specialist stores, hours can be spent browsing, listening and soaking up the atmosphere. There are also several independent shops and boutiques in the area where you can find that quirky one-off gift or specialist piece.

Blackburn is ideally situated for those looking to go on to higher education with three major red brick universities located less than an hour away. The Universities of Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds also offer a wide programme of undergraduate and postgraduate study.
