New homes in Leyland

Welcome to Leyland

Whether you’re playing with the kids at the park, shopping in the town centre or visiting local museums, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy in the Lancashire town of Leyland. Located in South Ribble just south of Preston, if you’re looking for good transport links and a friendly local community, a new home in Leyland could be the right choice for you.

A quick history

Leyland is mentioned in the Domesday Book, when the town was split into three ploughlands. St Andrew’s Parish Church was built in the 13th century, and by the late 1800s Leyland had become known as the ‘Garden of Lancashire’ thanks to its flowers, orchards and woodlands.

At the end of the 19th century, the motor industry began to flourish in Leyland, and The Leyland Steam Motor Company was founded in 1901.

Business and industry

Leyland is well-known within the automotive industry, with Leyland Motors expanding and eventually coming to own Rover and Standard-Triumph, before becoming the Rover Group in 1986. Today, only Leyland Trucks is left in the town, owned by Paccar. The Leyland Assembly Plant is considered one of the most advanced truck assembly facilities in Europe.

Other big employers in the local area include the NHS, the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, and Eka Chemicals in Blackburn. Preston is also home to the distribution wholesale company James Hall & Co, BAE Military Air Solutions, and insurance group Homeserve.

Things to do in the area

One of the most popular places to visit in Leyland is Worden Park, which has a large playground, hedge maze and walled gardens. South Ribble Museum and Exhibition Centre is housed in the restored 16th century grammar school, while the British Commercial Vehicles Museum is on King Street and hosts a number of events throughout the year.

Beyond the town, Preston is home to Withy Grove Park, Avenham and Miller Park, the Harris Museum, Art Gallery and Library and Lancashire Infantry Museum. Other nearby attractions include Brockholes Nature Reserve just off the M6, family fun days at Ribble Steam Railway, and the beautiful Samlesbury Hall.

If you want to get active, Energi Trampoline Park is located nearby in Preston. For more gentle exercise, you can take a day trip to the Forest of Bowland AONB for an afternoon walk, or play a round of golf at Leyland Golf Club.

Travel and commuting

Leyland has its own train station and is close to the M6, providing great transport links by road and rail. If you’re commuting to Preston for work, the train journey takes just five minutes while the drive takes just over 15 minutes. Blackburn is 25 minutes away by car or 35 minutes by train, changing once in Preston. Blackpool is 30 minutes away by car or train, while both Liverpool and Manchester can be reached in 45 minutes by car, or 50 minutes by train.

For journeys further afield, the drive to London takes three hours 50 minutes from Leyland travelling via the M40 and M6, while the train takes just two hours 25 minutes, changing once in Preston. If you’re going on holiday or travelling abroad for business, Blackpool Airport is a 30 minute drive from Leyland, while Manchester Airport can be reached in 40 minutes by car.
