A quick history

Barrow upon Soar was recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Barhoo’, and historians believe it was once used as an ancient burial place along the Great Salt Way. Archaeologists have also discovered Roman artefacts in the local area.

Historically, Barrow upon Soar had a successful lime industry, with locally mined chalk being burned in the lime kilns, which over the centuries has been used by the Romans, Normans and even during the construction of the London Underground. There was also a thriving makers industry, including cricket bats, clockmaking and chair mending.

In the mid 19th century, a dinosaur was excavated in one of the lime pits near the village and is now on display at Leicester’s New Walk Museum.

Business and industry

Manufacturing company KCT Holdings are based in Barrow upon Soar, while Loughborough is home to 3M Health Care, Fisher Scientific UK and Hancock's Topco. Other major employers nearby include fashion retailer Next in Enderby, Aggregate Industries in Markfield, Triumph Motorcycles in Measham and Caterpillar in Desford.

Things to do in the area

Travel and commuting

Whether you’re travelling by road or rail, Barrow upon Soar has very good transport connections. The M1 and A6 are both nearby, while the village train station has regular services to Loughborough, Leicester and beyond.

From the village, the journey to Loughborough takes just five minutes by train or 10 minutes by car, while Leicester is a 20 minute drive or train journey away. Nottingham is also within commuting distance, with the journey taking 30 minutes on average.

If you’re going to London, the train to St Pancras takes just one hour 55 minutes, changing once in Leicester. When you want to go further afield, East Midlands Airport is only a 20 minutes drive from Barrow upon Soar, travelling via the M1.
