New Homes In East Yorkshire

Welcome to East Yorkshire

From cultural cities to wild coastlines and rolling countryside, East Yorkshire is a diverse area in the North of England. The largest place in the region is the city of Hull, followed by the towns of Bridlington, Beverley and Goole, with attractions including Skipsea Castle, Beverley Minster and Hull Maritime Museum. If you’re looking for a place to live with good transport links and lots to see and do in the local area, a new home in East Yorkshire could be the right choice for you and your family.

A quick history

Evidence of human settlement in East Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Wolds stretches right back to Neolithic times, through to the Bronze Age, Iron Age and beyond. In the Roman era, several settlements and villas were built in the area, but by the end of the 5th century the Angles had invaded. The Danes arrived in the 9th century, and many modern day place names in the area have Scandinavian origins.

After the Norman Conquest, the Harrying of the North destroyed many villages in the area, with the land granted to the elite. By the 1700s and 1800s, canals and railways improved transportation in East Yorkshire, helping to boost the agricultural industry with links to the port in Hull, and bringing more tourism to the region.

Business and industry

The economy in East Yorkshire centres around tourism, agriculture and energy. Major employers in the area include BP, Centrica, the RAF, the British Army and the Royal Marines. BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire is based in Hull, while other employers in the port city include manufacturing firm Fenner, pork producer Cranswick and internet provider KCOM Group.

Things to do in the area

East Yorkshire is a diverse area, with something for the whole family to enjoy. Hull is home to a number of cultural attractions including Hull Maritime Museum, Streetlife Museum of Transport and the Old Town, along with KCOM Stadium which hosts the football team Hull City AFC, the rugby team Hull FC, and a small number of music concerts throughout the year.

If you like to get out for walks in the fresh country air, you can take a hike on the Yorkshire Wolds Way, explore the Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast, or go on the heritage trail through the villages of Rawcliffe and Pollington. Places to enjoy the seaside in East Yorkshire include Bridlington Beach, Hornsea Beach and Danes Dyke Beach.

If you’re moving to the area with a young family, there are lots of great kid-friendly attractions in East Yorkshire including The Deep aquarium in Hull, The Living Seas Centre in Flamborough, Bondville Model Village in Bridlington and Burnby Hall Gardens in Pocklington.

Travel and commuting

East Yorkshire is well connected by road and rail, with the M62 leading to Hull, and the M18 passing close to Goole. There are fast train services between Hull and London, while local bus services connect neighbouring towns and cities in the area. The Humber Bridge links Hessle and Hull with Barton-upon-Humber in Lincolnshire.

Travelling from one side of the region to the other, the journey from Hull to Bridlington takes 40 minutes by train or around 45 minutes by car via the A165. Hull is one hour away from York by either car or train, and if you’re going to London, the direct train service from Hull takes just two hours 40 minutes.

When you want to go on holiday, Humberside Airport is only a 30-minute drive or 55-minute bus journey from Hull.
