New Homes in Harrogate

Welcome to Harrogate

Whether you’re exploring castles, taking a walk in the countryside or shopping in the town centre, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the Yorkshire town of Harrogate. Named the ‘best place to live in Yorkshire and the North East’ by The Sunday Times in 2016, the town also has good transport links with commuter routes to both York and Leeds

A quick history

Up until the 1600s, Harrogate was just a small hamlet. After sulphur and iron-rich springs were discovered in the area, and the spa town gradually grew through the decades, and by the late 18th century, Harrogate’s population was around 25,000, boosted by the new hospital, pump room and railway line.

The Royal Baths were opened in 1897, but there was a reduced demand for spas after the Second World War, and Harrogate reinvented itself as a hub for business events, conferences and fairs, and continues to thrive to this day.

Business and industry

Harrogate International Centre is the third biggest of its kind in the UK, making the town a major destination for business events. Conferences are also held at Great Yorkshire Showground and Pavilions of Harrogate.

One of the most well-known businesses in Harrogate is Yorkshire Tea, along with Harrogate Spring Water and Farrah's Toffee. Other employers include cloud services company Financial Force, equipment hire firm Vp, and Mobile Tornado.

Things to do in the area

Harrogate has a bustling town centre, with high street shops on Cambridge Street, Oxford Street and James Street, along with the Victoria Shopping Centre. For designer and boutique shops, head to Montpellier Quarter.

The town and surrounding areas also have a number of popular historic sights, including Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Knaresborough Castle and Skipton Castle. To discover more about local history, The Royal Pump Room Museum and the Police and Prison Museum in Ripon are well worth a visit.

If you enjoy getting out in the great outdoors, you can go and explore the RHS Garden Harlow Carr, take a stroll around Newby Hall and Gardens, or take the kids to play at Valley Gardens. If you want to go hiking further afield, Nidderdale AONB and the Yorkshire Dales National Park are just a short drive away.

For evening entertainment, you can go and see a show at Harrogate Theatre or a film at the Odeon. The town also has a number of annual events including the History Festival and Harrogate Music Festival. The Great Yorkshire Show, the Harrogate Flower Shows and Countryside Live are hosted at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

Travel and commuting

Harrogate has good transport links to nearby towns and cities, including regular train services to Leeds and York. The town is on the A61 and A59, and west of the A1(M).

If you’re commuting to York, the journey takes 40 minutes by car or train, while Leeds is just 35 minutes away by car or 40 minutes by train. For journeys to Manchester, Sheffield is one hour 15 minutes away, while Manchester can be reached in one hour 30 minutes.

Travelling further afield, London is a three-hour 45-minute drive away, or three hours 20 minutes by train changing once at Leeds. If you’re going on holiday or away on business, Leeds Bradford International Airport is just 25 minutes away from Harrogate by car.
