Things to see and do

It’s all about beach life in Cayton. With its sandy stretches, great surf and abundance of wildlife, it’s a beautiful place to live.

The beach has both blue and yellow flags after frequently being awarded the ENAMS Seaside Award. Whether it’s building sandcastles with the kids or indulging in some R&R, Cayton Bay offers something for everyone.

History hunters will be kept busy tracking fossils from millions of years ago to the upper Jurassic period. Families can enjoy the many attractions on offer in Cayton, such as Playdale Farm Park; an indoor play area with a toddler area, tractor rides and adventure trail.

A great base to explore the Yorkshire coast, Scarborough is just four miles away and offers numerous things to see and do. Discover your creative side at South Street Gallery where you can take a number of classes from painting and tai chi to life drawing, while Y- Musical Theatre offers classes for all ages throughout the year.

Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre features exhibitions on Scarborough’s history, focusing on smuggling and shipwrecks, pirates and storms. A further highlight is the Rotunda Museum which dates back to 1829, and showcases a whole host of fascinating finds such as a Bronze Age man and skeleton of a Plesiosaur (long necked marine reptile) found on the Yorkshire coast.

Transport links

Despite being a little of the beaten track, the Yorkshire Coast has good transport links to the surrounding areas and further afield.

The A1 or M1 are both routes into the Yorkshire coast, running close to York in North Yorkshire.

Good road links are in place from the A64 which provides easy access to Scarborough from Leeds and York. Other main roads include the A171 Middlesborough – Whitby – Scarborough road, along with the A165 Scarborough – Hull road and the A170 Scarborough to Thrisk Road.

Commuters are well served with Scarborough Railway Station offering hourly services to and from Leeds (one hour and 25 minutes) and Manchester (two hours and 20 minutes) as well as offering connections to various other destinations around the UK.

Durham Tees International Airport is the nearest airport to Cayton and takes around an hour and 40 minutes to reach. It offers a range of domestic and international flights.
