A quick history

Wishaw is a relatively new village, but settlements in the local area date back to the 12th century. The modern day village grew around the late 18th century and was originally known as Cambusnethan. The composer Chopin visited in the 19th century, staying at Wishaw House.

Wishaw is historically an industrial town, and was once one of the main steel manufacturers in Scotland. Today the main employers in the town include the Royal Mail, Wishaw General Hospital and local retailers, while big businesses in nearby Glasgow include Morgan Stanley, Abellio ScotRail, Aggreko and BAE Systems Maritime. The University of Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian University, BBC Scotland and Glasgow City Council are also major employers.

Things to do in the area

Wishaw is home to a Wishaw Sports Centre, Wishaw Golf Club and a number of high street stores, while Chatelherault Country Park, Summerlee Heritage Park and Strathclyde Country Park are all nearby for walks in the great outdoors.

For families moving to the area, there are lots of kid-friendly attractions within driving distance including Rainforest Adventure Motherwell, M&D’s Scotland’s Theme Park and Amazonia. In Glasgow, places of interest include Glasgow Science Centre, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and St Enoch Shopping Centre.

Other places of interest nearby include Glasgow Botanic Gardens, North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre and Hamilton Ice Rink.

Travel and commuting

If you’re commuting for work or travelling to see family and friends, it’s good to know that Wishaw is well-connected by both road and rail. Glasgow is only a 30 minute car or train journey from the town, while you can get to Stirling in 50 minutes by car. For trips to Edinburgh, you can get to the Scottish capital in 55 minutes by train.

When it’s time to jet off on holiday, Glasgow Airport is a 35 minute drive away, while Edinburgh Airport can be reached in 45 minutes.
