New homes in Hexham

Welcome to Hexham

Whether you’re shopping at the local market, exploring historic sights or watching the horse racing, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy close to your new home in Hexham. Located close to Newcastle and with good train links into the city, Hexham is a popular commuter town and a friendly, charming place to live.

A quick history

Hexham’s history dates back to the 7th century, when Hexham Abbey was founded as a monastery. In the 9th century, the Anglo Saxon Chronicles mentions the murder of King Alfwald of Northumbria in the town, and he was buried at the Abbey.

In the late 13th century, Hexham was attacked by William Wallace as part of the ongoing border wars between the Scots and the English. The Battle of Hexham later took place during the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century, and afterwards the Duke of Somerset was executed in the market place. In 1761 the Hexham Riot saw the loss of 51 people at the hands of the North Yorkshire Militia.

Business and industry

Historically, leather-making is one of the main industries in Hexham, and today the town still has a manufacturing economy along with businesses from a range of other niches. The brewery Fentimans is located in Hexham, while other employers include engineering firm IHC, wood panel manufacturer EGGER (UK), and marketing company Dipsticks Research.

In neighbouring Newcastle, there are a number of major employers including Northern Gas and Power, the University of Newcastle, Virgin Money and Grainger Games. British Airways, BAE Systems and the Inland Revenue also employ locally.

Things to do in the area

Hexham is well known for its vibrant twice-weekly market, and bi-monthly farmer’s market. When the market is closed, there are lots of great independent shops in the town centre, perfect for an afternoon of browsing before relaxing in one of the town’s quaint cafes.

If you enjoy uncovering historic events, Hexham is a great place to live. The town is home to Hexham Old Gaol, the first purpose-built prison in Britain, along with Hexham Abbey which dates back to the 7th century. Vindolanda Roman ruins and the Roman Army Museum are also nearby.

If you’re a sports fan, you can watch the horseracing at Hexham Racecourse, or play a round at Hexham Golf Club or Tynedale Golf Club. Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Beauty are also nearby, ideal if you love hiking or cycling.

In the evening, watch a show at the Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, or visit the community-run The Forum Cinema. Make sure you keep an eye on the what’s on guides, as the town hosts a number of events throughout the year including the Hexham Book Festival and the Hexham Abbey Festival of Music and Arts.

Travel and commuting

If you’re commuting to nearby towns and cities, Hexham has good transport links with its own train station, and the A69 for car journeys. Travelling by car, the journey to Newcastle from Hexham takes just 30 minutes without traffic, or 40 minutes by train, while Carlisle is 50 minutes away by either car or train. The journey to Sunderland takes 50 minutes by car or 1 hour by train, and the car journey to Durham also takes 50 minutes.

If you’re going on holiday or working abroad, Hexham is only a 25 minutes drive from Newcastle International Airport and one hour 10 minutes away from Durham Tees Valley Airport.
