A quick history

Human settlements in and around Worthing date back to the Bronze Age, and the South Downs was once one of the biggest flint mining areas in the country. A number of Iron Age hill forts have been discovered locally including Cissbury Ring, while the Romans also occupied the area. 

Over the centuries Worthing became a fishing village, and when seaside holidays became fashionable in the 18th century, the area became more wealthy and expanded quickly. Oscar Wilde visited in the late 19th century, and later during the Second World War, Worthing was home to a number of military divisions involved in the D-Day landings.

Business and industry

Worthing is home to a number of employers including HMRC, GlaxoSmithKline and Southern Water. Businesses in Brighton include American Express and EDF Energy, while the University of Sussex, the University of Brighton and Brighton & Hove City Council are also major employers.

Things to do in the area

Worthing is best known for its coastal attractions, including the local beach, Worthing Pier and the Pavilion Theatre. Other places of interest in the town including Worthing Museum and Art Gallery,  Highdown Gardens and the Connaught Theatre.

If you love adventuring outdoors, there are lots of green spaces to explore close to your new home in Worthing including the South Downs National Park, Highdown Hill and Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

For families moving to Worthing, there are lots of kid-friendly attractions nearby including Drusillas Park, Splashpoint Leisure Centre and The Worthing Lido. If you enjoy a weekend round of golf, you can practice your swing at Worthing Golf Club or Rustington Golf Course.

Travel and commuting

If you’re commuting for work or visiting family and friends, it’s good to know that Worthing is well-connected by both road and rail. The journey to Brighton takes 25 minutes by train or 35 minutes by car, while you can get to Portsmouth in 50 minutes by car. If you’re going to London, the direct train takes just one hour 20 minutes.

When it’s time for a well-earned holiday, Gatwick Airport is only a 45 minute drive or 50 minute train journey from Worthing.
