Located just a short drive from Glasgow yet within easy reach of the beautiful Clyde Valley, a new home in Motherwell could tick all the right boxes for your next move.
A quick history
Motherwell dates back to Roman times, when the main route through Scotland ran alongside the River Clyde. The town’s name comes from an ancient well, and a plaque now marks the spot where it once stood. By the early 19th century Motherwell was still only a small farming community, but the population quickly boomed, with industrialisation bringing iron and steel production to the area. By the end of the 1800s, Motherwell was a sizable town with its own town hall and school.
Business and industry
Although Motherwell’s steel production industry declined in the late 20th century, the Dalzell Works still operates despite initial closure by Tata Steel. Motherwell is also a Fairtrade Town, while local employers include whisky distillery William Grant & Sons, and Terex Trucks.
Things to do in the area
Motherwell has a bustling town centre with lots to see and do, from a spot of retail therapy at Motherwell Shopping Centre to historic exhibitions at North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre and performances at Motherwell Theatre and Concert Hall. The town is also home to a number of tearooms and restaurants, as well as Motherwell Cathedral and Motherwell Library.
If you have children, the little ones will enjoy visiting Discover Amazonia, M&D’s Scotland’s Theme Park and Strathclyde Country Park, while the grown ups can practice their golf swing at Dalziel Park Golf Club and Wishaw Golf Club.
