Located in Greater Manchester, Bolton is a town rich in history and heritage. Formerly  a mill town and close to the West Pennine Moors, it’s surrounded by lovely countryside, while still having easy access to the nearby city of Manchester. Offering a great selection of amenities alongside a number of attractions, buying a new home in Bolton won’t disappoint.

Things to see and do

Delve into the town’s history by taking a trip to the Bolton Steam Museum. Run by volunteers who rescued 25 old steam engines which once powered the cotton mills of Yorkshire and Lancashire, it has the UK’s biggest collection of working steam mill. The Bolton Museum and Art Gallery is a further attraction where you can see everything from Egyptian mummies to local history and wildlife. A great family day out, you can enjoy displays of Egyptology, Zoology, Archaeology and Botany. Bolton Aquarium is another great day out for those with children. Here you can meet exotic fish with fantastic colours and scary creatures of the deep, such as piranhas from South America.

Echoes of Bolton’s history can also be discovered at a number of historic houses and halls in and around the town. Smithills Hall, for example, is one of Bolton’s original family homes and features examples of architecture from a variety of periods from Medieval to Tudor, right through to Victorian times.

Hall i’th’ Wood is a further highlight. Built in the sixteenth century, the building was home to Samuel Crompton who revolutionised the cotton industry when he invented the Spinning Mule in 1779.

Beautiful Bolton Abbey is another top attraction. Set in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales in just under 30,000 acres of lovely countryside, the fascinating ruins of the priory can be explored before taking to one of the many paths and discovering the surrounding landscape.

Bolton has many bars and pubs, but you can learn all about the brewing process with a trip to Bank Top Brewery. Housed in a grade two listed tennis pavilion, the brewery produces around 22,000 pints a week and of course, it would only be polite to sample the goods.

Manchester is just 12 miles from Bolton and is a great city offering plenty to do. From excellent shopping to attractions such as the Museum of Science and Industry and National Football Museum, it makes for an exciting day out and is right on your doorstep. And with a huge selection of restaurants and bars offering every option you could think of, when evening falls there’ll be no shortage of places to go.

Whether travelling by road, rail or air, Bolton is easy to reach from across the UK. Just 12 miles from Manchester city centre and 20 miles from Manchester Airport, Bolton is served by the M60, M61 and M6.

Bolton is served by one of Greater Manchester’s busiest rail stations that offers connections to London (two hours 50) and several destinations around the UK. Birmingham can be reached in two hours 30, Liverpool in one hour 10 and Edinburgh in three hours 30. Offering domestic and international flights, Manchester airport is just 20 miles away.
