New homes in Northallerton

Welcome to Northallerton

If you’re looking to live in a rural market town within easy reach of York, a new home in Northallerton could tick all the right boxes for you. With great transport links and lots to see and do in the local area, it’s no wonder Northallerton is such a popular town with families of all ages.

A quick history

Northallerton dates back to Roman times when historians believe it was used as a military base. Later the Saxons populated the area, but by the 11th century, the town was deserted. When the battle with the Scots for land in the north was over, a motte and bailey castle was built in the town, later becoming a palace. By the mid 17th century, the palace was a ruin.

Later Northallerton became a market town, with the trade of sheep and cattle. When the railway line was built in the 19th century, Northallerton thrived with good transport links to York and Newcastle.

Business and industry

Northallerton is still a rural and agricultural town, with a livestock auction taking place twice a week. The town is also home to North Yorkshire County Council and Hambleton District Council, while the RAF Leeming is also a major local employer.
