Shepton is an Old English place name, but archaeologists have discovered artefacts in the local region dating back to and prehistoric times, along with a number of ancient burial mounds. The town was first mentioned in the Domesday Book, while the name ‘Mallet’ is believed to derive from a Norman family who lived in the area in the 12th century. Cloth making and wool trading became major industries in Shepton Mallet in the 15th century, and thrived over the centuries that followed.
