New homes in Cirencester

Welcome to Cirencester

Cirencester is a picturesque town in rural Gloucestershire, located at the heart of the Cotswolds and just a short distance away from Cheltenham, Gloucester and Swindon. If you love the hustle and bustle of a market town and want to live somewhere with plenty of charm and character, a new home in Cirencester could be the perfect choice for you.

A quick history

Cirencester was an important Roman town, with a prosperous wool trade industry that helped it to grow. The town’s abbey was built in the 12th century, but later destroyed by King Henry VIII when he dissolved the monasteries.

During the Middle Ages, industry in Cirencester expanded to include weaving and cloth-making which generated a lot of wealth. During the English Civil War in the 17th century, there was a deadly battle in the town with around 300 people being killed and thousands held captive.

By the turn of the 18th century the market in Cirencester was flourishing, and the introduction of railways in the 19th century helped the town grow even more. Today it’s known as the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds’.

Business and industry

The biggest employers in Cirencester are wealth management company St James’ Place, vehicle distribution company The Colt Car Co, Crown Timber Group, Zycko Ltd and orthopaedic device manufacturers Corin Group. Money.co.uk, Pegasus Planning and the Royal Agricultural University are also based in the town, while businesses in Swindon, Cheltenham and Gloucester are easy for commuters to reach by car.

Things to do in the area

Corinium Museum tells the story of the Cotswolds through the ages, with exhibits of Roman artefacts found in the town including mosaics and tombstones. Other historic attractions in the town include Chedworth Roman Villa, the site of the town’s Roman amphitheatre, and St John the Baptist Church and Abbey Grounds.

There are lots of independent shops and boutiques in the town centre, along with popular restaurants, cafes and a market, which is one of the oldest of its kind in the UK. If you want some peace and quiet, you can go and take a relaxing stroll through Cirencester Park.

If you’ve moved to Cirencester with children, there are lots of great family-friendly attractions in the local area. MagicLand is a large soft play centre, while Cotswold Water Park is home to 150 lakes where you can relax on a manmade beach, go birdwatching, or enjoy a cycle ride through the 40 square mile park.
