Horsham was first mentioned in the history books in the 10th century, and over the decades that followed became known for horse and cattle trading as well as brick making and iron smelting in more recent centuries. In the Medieval era Horsham had a twice weekly market, and it continued to prosper as a market and brewing town throughout the 20th century. 

Business and industry

Historically Horsham is associated with agriculture, iron working, brick making and brewing, and many of these industries are still going today, alongside other diverse businesses spanning technology, financial services and pharmaceuticals.

Employers in Horsham include the RSA Insurance Group and video game developers Creative Assembly, while the RSPCA is headquartered nearby in Southwater. Many people living in Horsham commute into London for work, where employers include GlaxoSmithKline, HSBC, the London Stock Exchange and the capital’s many universities.

Things to do in the area

If you enjoy a spot of retail therapy, Horsham’s pedestrianised town centre is home to a number of high street stores as well as independent retailers. Swan Walk shopping centre is popular, while other retail areas include the Forum and Piries Place.

To discover more about the town’s history, a visit to Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is a must. Other historical sights near Horsham include Wings Museum in Balcombe and Worthing Museum and Art Gallery.

If you enjoy getting out and about in the great outdoors, there are lots of places to enjoy the fresh air near Horsham. Sumners Ponds is a beautiful place to go fishing or simply enjoy a cup of tea by the lake, while Warnham Local Nature Reserve is home to more than 100 species of bird. In the town itself, Horsham Park has a lake, sensory garden, tennis courts and an orienteering course, along with free events throughout the year.

Horsham is also on the edge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and near the South Downs National Park, perfect for adventures on foot or by bike.

Travel and commuting

Located on the A27 and with its own train station, Horsham is a well-connected town and popular with commuters. The journey to Crawley takes 10 minutes by train or 20 minutes by car, while Brighton is 45 minutes away by car or just over 45 minutes by train with a change at Three Bridges.

If you’re travelling to Guildford, the drive takes around 45 minutes, while Chichester can be reached in 55 minutes by car or 35 minutes by train. To get to London, the train journey to Victoria takes just 50 minutes, and the car journey takes one hour 40 minutes depending on traffic.

When it’s time for a well-earned holiday, London Gatwick is only a 15 minute train journey away from Horsham or 25 minutes by car.
