A quick history
The first mention of Dalkeith in the history books is in the writings of author Jean Froissart, who stayed at the castle in the 14th century. The same castle was later used in the 17th century by Oliver Cromwell’s governor. At this time, Dalkeith had one of the most important and bustling markets in all of Scotland, and the tradition continues to this day.
Dalkeith prospered after a railway line was built between the town and Edinburgh for the transportation of goods, and a Corn Exchange was built as a result in the mid-19th century. Today Dalkeith is a popular commuter town, with good transport links into Edinburgh.
