Things to see and do in Portobello

You really can enjoy life by the beach in Portobello, and the town’s stretch of sand is a highlight all year round. From sunny summer days building sandcastles with your little ones to wintery dog walks with spectacular views out across the Firth of Forth, the beach is lined with cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as shops, boat clubs, markets and even a Victorian swimming pool. 

Straiton Place Park and the Prince of Wales Fountain also lie along the promenade, while Rosefield Park and Friggate Park are both set back from the shore. With Holyrood Park just the other side of Northfield, a collection of beautiful local golf courses and easy access to the Pentland Hills and Scottish Lowlands, the centre of Edinburgh is only a few miles away too. 


The town has many good options to choose between when it comes to schooling. Primaries include Towerbank Primary, which is only steps from the promenade, and St John’s RC Primary next to Figgate Park. The local secondary is Portobello High School on Milton Road, while Holy Rood RC High School is another option for older children in the town. 

Transport links in Portobello

Portobello’s train station is Brunstane, which lies at the A1’s junction with the A199. Services into the centre of Edinburgh take just seven minutes, while cycling into the city is also popular among commuters. Trains to Glasgow take around an hour, while you can drive to Scotland’s biggest city in a similar amount of time along the M8.
