A quick history

Dunstable dates back to Roman times, when Watling Street and Icknield Way crossed where the modern town now stands. The town began as a posting station, and eventually a settlement grew around the crossroads. When the Romans left Britain Dunstable was abandoned for centuries, but in the 12th century the a new town was built by King Henry I.

In Medieval times, Dunstable was a thriving market town, but in 1213 much of the town was destroyed by fire. The town priory was a place of pilgrimage, and by the middle of the 13th century the friars arrived. King Henry VIII’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon was announced in the priory church. During the Second World War, children were evacuated to Dunstable from London.
