New Homes in Westbury

New Homes in Westbury

Welcome to Westbury

Whether you’re exploring the countryside, enjoying a shopping trip in nearby cities or practicing your golf swing, there’s something for the whole family close to the town of Westbury. Located in Wiltshire just a short commute from Bath, a new home in Westbury could just tick all the right boxes for your next house move.

A quick history

The most iconic site in Westbury is the Westbury White Horse, which some believe dates back as far as the 9th century. Most historians, however, date the horse around the 18th century, with the current form dating back to 1778. It was then set in concrete in the 1950s for easier maintenance. Westbury’s history is closely tied to the town market, with the annual sheep fair being one of the biggest dates in the calendar right up until the 1940s.

Business and industry

Westbury was once home to a large cement works, which was demolished in 2016. Today there are a number of small businesses in the town including estate agents and retailers, while Bath is only a short drive away, where employers include Bath & North East Somerset Council,  the University of Bath, Wessex Water, EduServ and media company Future.

Things to do in the area

Westbury is best-know for the White Horse on Salisbury Plain, while other places of interest in and around the town include the Kennet and Avon Canal, Westbury Golf Club and Leighton Recreation Ground.

If you’re moving to the area with children, they’ll love visiting Longleat Safari Park, Victoria Falls Adventure Golf and Wookey Hole Caves, while there are lots of great places to explore the countryside nearby including the Mendip Hills, the North Wessex Downs and Brokerswood Country Park.

For a spot of history, you can pay a visit to the world-famous Stonehenge, or browse the exhibits at Trowbridge Museum. Farleigh Hungerford Castle is also within reach of your new home in Westbury.

Travel and commuting

Whether you’re commuting for work or visiting friends and family, it’s good to know that Westbury is well-connected by both road and rail. The town is only a 25 minute train journey or 30 minute drive from Bath, while you can get to both Bristol and Swindon in 45 minutes by train.

For journeys to London, there’s a direct train from Westbury to Paddington with a journey time of one hour 20 minutes. If you’re jetting off on holiday, Bristol Airport is only an hour’s drive away.
