A quick history

Calne dates back to Anglo Saxon times, and over the centuries the settlement grew into a thriving market town on the main route between Bristol and London. By the 18th century, Calne had a successful wool industry, with a number of cloth mills in the area. In 1810, a canal linked Calne to the transport route for Somerset coal, but it was abandoned in the early 20th century. The Harris pork processing factory was a major employer in Calne until the 1980s, with most residents now commuting to Chippenham, Swindon and Bath for work.

Business and industry

Today Calne is home to a number of businesses at the Porte Marsh Industrial Estate, including Fabrinet UK. Major employers nearby in Bath include Wessex Water, Rotork PLC and Jamie’s Italian, while Swindon is home to Nationwide Building Society, Intel UK, NPower and WH Smith.

Things to do in the area

Each year the town hosts the Calne Music and Arts Festival, while Bowood House and Gardens also holds regular events throughout the seasons. If you love exploring the great outdoors, you can go walking in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, take the kids to Drews Pond Wood Local Nature Reserve or enjoy a round of golf at North Wilts Golf Club.

In nearby Chippenham, you can go shopping along the high street, take the little ones to Farmtastic Animal Farm or see the exhibits at Chippenham Museum and Heritage Centre. Other places worth visiting close to your new home in Calne include Atwell Wilson Motor Museum, Avebury Stone Circle and Silbury Hill, while the shops, restaurants and historic attractions of Bath are also nearby. 

Travel and commuting

Calne is well-connected by road, with the journey to Chippenham taking 15 minutes by car. Swindon is a 35 minute drive away, while Bath can be reached in 45 minutes and Bristol in just under one hour depending on traffic. The nearest train station is in Chippenham, with regular services to nearby towns and cities.

If you’re going on holiday, you can get to London Heathrow in around one hour 25 minutes travelling via the M4, while Bristol Airport is slightly closer with a journey time of one hour 15 minutes on average.
