A quick history

Stoke is a pottery town, with the industry dating back to the 17th century. Josiah Wedgwood established his now-famous earthenware business in the mid 1700s, with pottery production eventually making Stoke one of the leading towns during industrialisation. The Grand Trunk Canal opened in 1777, and was used for transportation between Stoke and the ports of Liverpool and Hull. At one time, thousands of bottle kilns were located in Stoke, with only 46 remaining today as listed buildings.

In the 1850s, smaller towns started to be merged, and eventually Stoke-on-Trent became a county borough in 1910, and was named a city in 1925.
