New Homes in the West Midlands

Welcome to the West Midlands

Encompassing some of the biggest cities and towns in the UK, offers a relatively small but densely populated and diverse part of England with DWH presenting:

With lots of cultural attractions, plenty of employment opportunities and good universities, your new home in the West Midlands will be close to fun days out, top-rated businesses and the country’s best event arenas.

A quick history

The West Midlands is a relatively ‘new’ county, formed in 1974, but the history of its towns and cities stretches right back through the centuries. Birmingham began as a small Saxon village, growing quickly after the introduction of a regular market in 1166. The city had a boom in the 17th century with yet more markets selling wool, leather and metalwork, and carried on growing after connecting to London and Liverpool by train from the mid-19th century.

During the Second World War, Birmingham and Coventry were a target for the Germans due to the large number of factories in the cities, so they were bombed heavily and many parts completely destroyed. This lead to mass redevelopment once the war was over, with new housing and pedestrianised shopping areas. Today, Birmingham is the second largest city in Britain, and the West Midlands is a thriving place to live and work.

Businesses and industry

Traditionally the West Midlands was rooted in the manufacturing industry, especially of wool, cloth and cars. With its excellent transport links and central location, the region is now home to a wide range of businesses spanning industries including energy, retail and financial services, making it one of the busiest corporate hubs outside of London.

A number of big businesses count the West Midlands as home, including Jaguar Land Rover, Birmingham City Council, E.On Energy Solutions and Aldi Stores. Other well-known names include GKN PLC, Carillion PLC, J.C.B Service, Jewsons, AAH Pharmaceuticals and Mitchells & Butlers. The National Express Group, Severn Trent, Bet365 Group, Wolseley UK, NFU Mutual Insurance Society, Marston’s and Halfords Group also count the West Midlands as home.

Things to do in the area

Whether you’re entertaining your own children or the grandkids, there are lots of family-friendly attractions within driving distance of your new home in the West Midlands. Find out how chocolate is made at Cadbury World, see the animals at Dudley Zoo and West Midland Safari Park, or find out more about local history at the Coventry Transport Museum.

For the adults, there’s great high street and designer shopping at The Bullring Birmingham, history at Aston Hall, and sports at Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Other places of interest include Wolverhampton Racecourse, the Black Country Living Museum, the International Convention Centre, the Barclaycard Arena (formerly the National Indoor Arena), and the National Exhibition Centre. Top-flight football is played by Aston Villa at Villa Park, and West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Travel and commuting

The West Midlands is served by a number of big motorways including the M5, M6, and M42. To avoid the notoriously busy ‘spaghetti junction’ and other congestion in Birmingham, train journeys within the local area and further afield are regular, with services to London, Manchester and other major cities. Travelling to the capital by train, the journey time from Birmingham New Street to London Euston is just 1 hour 30 minutes.

For travel abroad, you can get to Birmingham Airport easily from any location within the West Midlands. As a major airport, there are both long and short-haul flights from Birmingham, linking the city with Europe and the rest of the world.
