Things to see and do in Stroud


A stroll through the centre of town reveals everything from shops, bars and bowling alleys to historic landmarks like Stroud Parish Church and the Subscription Rooms. The large Stratford Park on the edge of town has a lake and leisure complex, and is also home to the Walled Garden and a range of local history exhibits at the Museum in the Park. 

Painswick Rococo Garden is just north of town, while you can spend endless days exploring the Cotswolds on foot, your bike or even in the car. If you like walking, don’t miss the spectacular views from Swift’s Hill to the east, or from Coaley Peak in the opposite direction. 

Education


Stroud has a strong selection of schools to choose between in and around town, including the Rosary Catholic Primary, Stroud Valley Community Primary and Rodborough Community Primary. All of these are rated as good by Ofsted, while Uplands Community Primary is outstanding. 

At secondary level, Stroud High School is an outstanding state grammar school for girls, while Marling School down the road is a boys’ state grammar. Should you need another option, Thomas Keble School is a good mixed secondary in neighbouring Eastcombe, while Maidenhill School is over in Stonehouse. 

Transport links in Stroud


Stroud has a handy location five miles from Junction 13 of the M5 motorway, although you don’t need to use it for the short drive north to Gloucester along the A4173. You can jump on the motorway to reach Bristol in just over half an hour, while the town also has plenty of bus routes and a train station just off Rowcroft. It’s also within an hour’s drive of two international airports, Birmingham and Bristol.
