A quick history

Artefacts found in Coulsdon date back to Neolithic times, with evidence of life during the Iron Age, Anglo-Saxon era and Roman times. In the Domesday Book, the settlement was known as ‘Colesdone’, and over the centuries the region was home to farms and manor houses. When the railways were built, Coulsdon grew quickly, with a lime kiln and quarry opening in the 19th century. The lime works closed in the mid-20th century, but today Coulsdon is a popular place to live for people commuting into central London.

Business and industry

Coulsdon is home to a number of big businesses including publishing company Jane’s Information Group, while Total Gas and Power have offices in Redhill nearby. Marlpit Industrial and Business Park estate in the town is also a base for technology and distribution companies.

Croydon is just a short train journey away, where major employers include Mott Macdonald and hospital equipment manufacturers SLE. Many people who live in Coulsdon commute into London for work, where employers include HSBC, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Barclays and GlaxoSmithKline.

Things to do in the area

Despite being located so close to London, there are lots of places to enjoy the great outdoors close to Coulsdon, including Happy Valley Park where you can spot wild flowers and animals as you walk through the nature trails. Riddlesdown Common and Farthing Downs are also nearby, ideal if you’re walking the dog or taking a relaxing Sunday afternoon stroll.

Coulsdon is also home to a number of parks including Rickman Hill Park and Grange Park, while The Memorial Gardens are popular for the adventure park, tennis courts and crazy golf course. If you’re moving to Coulsdon with children, there are a number of great family attractions within easy reach of Coulsdon, including Godstone Farm, Deen City Farm and Surrey Hill Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Travel and commuting

Coulsdon has two train stations- Coulsdon South and Coulsdon Town- with regular services into central London and further afield. The town is located within the M25, with the nearest junction being number seven.

Coulsdon is a 15 minute drive away from Croydon or just 10 minutes by train, while Epsom can be reached in 20 minutes by either car or train. If you’re working in central London, the train from Coulsdon South to London Bridge takes just 30 minutes, while Brighton can be reached in around one hour.

If you’re going on holiday, Coulsdon is conveniently just 20 minutes away from Gatwick Airport with direct train routes to the airport’s station from Coulsdon South.
