New Homes in Portobello

Welcome to Portobello

Whether you’re walking along the coast, visiting the city or exploring historic sites, there’s plenty to see and do close to the town of Portobello. Located on the outskirts of Edinburgh alongside the Firth of Forth, a new home in Portobello could just tick all the right boxes for you and your family.

A quick history

Portobello was once known as Figgate Muir, when the area was mainly moorland and farming pastures. In the 17th century, Oliver Cromwell is believed to have met with Scottish leaders on the moors in secret, and by the 1900s it was a place for smugglers and seamen. One of these seamen built a cottage in the area and named it Portobello Hut, and a town gradually grew around it. Portobello eventually became a manufacturing town and holiday resort, and today is home to one of just three Turkish baths in Scotland.

Business and industry

Located on the edge of Edinburgh, Portobello is close to the Scottish capital’s many employers including NHS Lothian, the City of Edinburgh Council, the University of Edinburgh and the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. Other major employers include Lloyds Banking Group, Standard Life, The Scottish Government, Lothian and Borders Police, and Tesco Bank.

Things to do in the area

Portobello is a seaside resort, home to a number of Victorian buildings with cafes, independent shops and restaurants. Portobello Swimming Pool has its own historic Turkish Bath, while other attractions in the town include the promenade and beach, Straiton Place Park and Figgate Park.
