When you think of Edinburgh, many people’s first thought is the world-famous Edinburgh International Festival. The city’s pulsating cultural calendar also throws up treats like the annual Fringe festival, while you can also set your pulse racing with a walk up extinct volcano Arthur’s Seat. From here you can soak up unbeatable panoramic views back over the city and out over the Firth of Forth.
For other people, Edinburgh Castle is the first thing that springs to mind. The iconic fortification is perched grandly on top of a rocky outcrop in the Old Town, giving you more great views as well as a fascinating heritage to devour. Back down on street level, don’t miss the Scottish National Gallery, the National Museum of Scotland St Giles’ Cathedral and the Palace of Holyroodhouse on your cultural tour of Edinburgh. -
Edinburgh has a fine selection of schools, with top primary options including Sciennes Primary School. Close to Holyrood Park, it’s the biggest school in the city as well as one of the best in terms of performance. A popular route from this school is for children to continue their education at the highly regarded James Gillespie’s High School, although Boroughmuir High School in the Fountainbridge area is another top secondary that may be of interest.

Edinburgh has great connections both for getting around Scotland and the rest of the UK. And indeed beyond, thanks to its busy international airport just a few miles from the city centre. Back in town there are two major train stations, Waverley and Haymarket, while you can also rely on lots of regular bus routes to get around. There’s also a tram service which you can use to get between the airport and the New Town area, while the M8, M9 and M90 motorways all start close to Edinburgh. You can use the former to get to Glasgow in less than an hour.
