A quick history
Relics from Anglo-Saxon times have been discovered in Deeside, but it wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution when towns in the region started to grow. Coal mining, the steelworks, shipbuilding and better transport links brought more wealth to Deeside, especially in Shotton and Connah’s Quay.
Deeside has been home to a number of famous faces over the years, including former Prime Minister William Gladwell and footballers Michael Owen and Gary Speed.

Although the economy of Deeside has largely been based on steel, coal and ships, the region is now home to a wide range of businesses across many different industries. The biggest companies based in Deeside include supermarket chain Iceland, Tata Steel UK, Moneysupermarket.com, Stella Travel Services, Corbett Bookmakers and Convatec.
Things to do in the area
Wepre Park in Connah’s Quay is perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll, and popular with dog walkers. If you want to get active, The Boardroom Climbing is a great place to visit, while The Flintshire Bridge is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Deeside.

Travel and commuting
The main roads going through Deeside are the A55 and the A494, while the M56 is close by. The region also has train stations in Shotton and Hawarden.
Chester is just 15 minutes away from Deeside by car, while Flint is 10 minutes away by car or five minutes away by train. Liverpool is a 35-minute drive north of Deeside, while Wrexham can be reached in 25 minutes by either car or train. If you’re travelling to Manchester, the car journey takes almost one hour travelling via the M56.
For journeys further afield, London is three hours 50 minutes away by car via the M40, or two hours 35 minutes travelling by train from Shotton to Euston, with one change at Crewe. If you’re going abroad, Liverpool John Lennon Airport is 40 minutes away by car and Manchester Airport can be reached in 35 minutes.
