New homes in Hassocks

Welcome to Hassocks

If you want to live in a rural location within easy reach of Brighton and London, a new home in Hassocks could tick all the right boxes for you.

A quick history

The history of Hassocks dates back to the Stone Age when farmers settled on the South Downs. The area was later populated during the Bronze Age, while you can still see the remains of an Iron Age fort on Wolstonbury Hill.

In Roman times, Hassocks was located at a crossroads on the journey from London to the south coast. Up until the 19th century, Hassocks remained a very small settlement with just a handful of houses and a coaching house. When Hassocks Gate station was opened in 1841, the village began to grow, while wartime evacuations boosted the population even further. Today Hassocks is a vibrant village with a number of shops, cafes and restaurants.

Business and industry

Hassocks residents generally commute for work, with big employers including American Express and Lloyds Bank located nearby in Brighton, and Virgin Holidays in Crawley. The village is also within commuting distance of London, where major employers include HSBC, GlaxoSmithKline and Aviva.

Things to do in the area

If you love getting out and about in the great outdoors, there are lots of beautiful places to take a walk or cycle ride close to the village including the ancient Butchers Wood, and the vast countryside of the South Downs National Park. The village is also known for the Clayton Windmills, otherwise known as ‘Jack and Jill’. Jill Windmill is open to visitors on Sunday afternoons only.

Located close to Brighton, there are lots of great attractions nearby including the British Airways i360, Brighton Sea Life Centre, the pier and beach. If you want to go shopping, North Laine and The Lanes are home to a huge range of independent, designer and quirky vintage boutiques.
