A quick history

Wednesbury dates back to the Iron Age, with the discovery of a hill fort in the local area. During Anglo-Saxon times, historians believed there were a number of battles in the region, and it was later fortified against invasion from the Danes. By the time the Domesday Book was recorded, Wednesbury was a thriving settlement, but it continued to be mainly agricultural until the first coal pits were opened in the 14th century. The town later became known for pottery, nail making and the local steel works which closed in 1980.

There are a number of employers in the area including furniture retailer IKEA, along with other shops at the local retail parks. Located within easy reach of Birmingham, lots of people commute into the city for work from Wednesbury, where employers include National Express and the universities.

Wednesbury town centre is a bustling place with a weekly market and a pedestrianised shopping area, along with cafes, restaurants and visitor attractions including Wednesbury Museum and Art Gallery.
