A quick history

The history of the Vale of Glamorgan stretches back to ancient times, with the discovery of artefacts in the region. There’s evidence of Roman occupation, including a villa at Llandough, while the Vikings later raided Barry Island and the surrounding areas.

During the Medieval era, the village of Cosmeston was home to the Norman De Costentin family’s manor house. They were some of the first Normans to settle in Wales after the invasion by William the Conquerer in 1066.

In the 19th century, Barry started to become a port town, and by the 1910s it was one of the biggest exporters of coal in the world. In 1996, the Vale of Glamorgan became its own county borough.
