New Homes in Pontypool

Welcome to Pontypool

Whether you’re walking through local parks, shopping in the town centre or visiting historic sites, there’s no shortage of things to do and places to see close to the South Wales town of Pontypool. Located just a short commute from Newport yet surrounded by countryside, a new home in Pontypool could tick all the right boxes for you and your family.

A quick history

Pontypool was one of the first industrial towns in Wales, with a blast furnace in the area as early as the 15th century. By the 1600s the town was growing quickly, with the local ironworks and later the japan works, which used the japanning process to create decorative metal plates. Although industrialisation in Pontypool eventually came to a halt, today the town is thriving as a commuter area with lots to see and do locally.

Business and industry

Pontypool is home to Carlisle Brake Products, while Wales and West Utilities, Acorn (Synergie) UK and Severn Power are located nearby in Newport. Cardiff is also within commuting distance of Pontypool, where employers include Arriva Trains Wales, Admiral Group, Cardiff Council and Cardiff University.

Things to do in the area

Pontypool Park is one of the town’s most popular places to visit, where you’ll find children’s playgrounds, the Italian Gardens, Folly Tower and Gorsedd Stone Circle. The town is also home to Pontypool Museum and Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway.

If you enjoy uncovering local history, you can pay a visit to Big Pit National Coal Mining Museum, Blaenavon Ironworks and Abergavenny Castle and Museum, while kids will enjoy visiting Greenmeadow Community Farm in Cwmbran nearby.

For a breath of fresh air, you can go hiking in the Brecon Beacons National Park, cycling in Cwmcarn or exploring the grounds of Tredegar House, a National Trust estate near Newport. Other places of interest include Llandegfedd Reservoir, Coity Mountain and the National Roman Legion Museum.

If you want to commute to work or travel to see family and friends, it’s good to know that Pontypool is well-connected by road and rail. The journey to Newport takes 20 minutes by car or 15 minutes by train, while the journey to Cardiff takes 35 minutes by road or rail.
