A quick history
History in the local area dates back to Roman times, when there was a settlement around the Roman road. Over the centuries the area became a mining region, and is now known as one of the main birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution. In the 1960s a new town was built, originally known as Dawley but renamed Telford after the engineer Thomas Telford. The town was eventually connected to the UK’s main motorway network in the 1980s, after the completion of the M54.
Business and industry
Telford has an industrial heritage, but today there are a number of varied employers in the town and the surrounding areas including Golden Bear Toys, Natural Selection Foods, Network Telecom and TTC Group, along with Telford International Centre events space. The town is also within commuting distance of Birmingham, where businesses include National Express and Mondelez International.
Things to do in the area
With a recently revamped town centre, Telford is home to high street and designer store at Telford Shopping Centre, along with restaurants, bars and community spaces. The town is also home to lots of sports teams, including the football team AFC Telford United, rugby team Telford Raiders and the basketball club the Shropshire Warriors. The Telford Tigers are the town’s ice hockey team, while Shropshire Revolution play American Football.
With strong links to the Industrial Revolution, there are plenty of historic sites to explore in the local area including Blists Hill Victorian Town and the Jackfield Tile Museum at Ironbridge Gorge. Buildwas Abbey and Benthall Hall are also nearby.
For families moving to the area, you can take the kids for a bike ride at Telford Town Park, enjoy a day out at Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom or go for a hike through the Shropshire Hills, while other places of interest nearby include Shifnal Golf Club and the Royal Air Force Museum.
Travel and commuting
Telford is well-connected by road and rail, with both the drive and train journey to Birmingham taking around 35 minutes. You can get to Shrewsbury in just 20 minutes by car from Telford, while the journey to London takes just two hours 20 minutes by train changing once at Birmingham New Street.
