New homes in Caerwent

Welcome to Caerwent

Located in the Welsh border county of Monmouthshire, Caerwent is a village dotted with some of the most important Roman ruins in Europe. Just a short drive west of Chepstow and north of Newport, Caerwent has a small and welcoming community with just a traditional village pub and a post office. If you’re looking for rural living within easy reach of surrounding towns and cities, a home in Caerwent could be perfect for you.

The history of the area

Caerwent’s history is rooted in Roman times, when it was a market town known as ‘Venta Silurum’. Back then, around the year 75AD, the Silures tribe built the town with large defensive walls, which can still be seen today and still reach up to 5 metres in some places. At the time it was one of the largest settlements in Wales with around 3,000 residents in the 2nd century, and was an important thoroughfare for travellers between Caerleon and Gloucester. A couple of centuries later and Caerwent was in decline, and today is a small rural village.

Over the years there have been many archaeological digs in Caerwent, uncovering some mosaics, metalwork, Christian burials and a Roman temple. In the 20th century, Caerwent was used as a storage station for the air force during the Second World War, and has since been used as an army training location.

Businesses and industry

As Caerwent is a small village, most residents commute to the surrounding towns and cities for work, including Newport, Cardiff, Chepstow and Monmouth. Employers in Monmouthshire include Abergavenny Food Festival, the National Diving and Activity Centre, Select Security, Reid Lifting and local schools, while nearby Newport is home to big businesses including Gocompare.com, Wales & West Utilities, Acorn (Synergie) UK, Severn Power, Airbus DS and Monmouthshire Building Society.

Things to do in the area

As an important Roman site, Caerwent is full of archaeological gems including the old city walls, excavated houses, a temple and a forum-basilica. As such a well-preserved historic location, the Roman town is protected by CADW. There are also a number of other historic attractions nearby, including Tintern Abbey which once inspired the poet William Wordsworth, Chepstow Castle, Caldicot Castle, Raglan Castle and Usk Castle.

If you have children, there’s plenty to do within a short drive of Caerwent including Offa’s Dyke walking trail, Celtic Manor Adventure Golf, and the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon. Other places of interest near to Caerwent include Dewstow Gardens & Hidden Grottoes, Chepstow Racecourse, Kymin Hill, Abergavenny Castle and Museum, and Usk Rural Life Museum.

Although Caerwent is a small village, your new home is just a short drive away from the town of Chepstow - where you’ll find boutique shops and locally-run restaurants - and the city of Newport which is home to high street shopping and city centre amenities including cinemas, theatres and leisure centres.

Travel and commuting

Caerwent is located along the A48, which connects the village to Chepstow in the west and junction 24 of the M4 in the east. The M48 is also close by, which leads to the old Severn bridge and links up with the M4 at junction 21.

As for public transport, there is no train station in the village but Chepstow Station is just a short drive away. From there, rail services link direct to Newport in just over 20 minutes, Gloucester in 30 minutes, and Cheltenham in 40 minutes. There’s also a direct train to the Welsh capital Cardiff, with a journey time of just over 40 minutes. For international travel, Cardiff Airport and Bristol Airport are both located less than an hour from Caerwent, with links to Europe and the rest of the world.
