New Homes in the Isle of Wight

New Homes in the Isle of Wight

Welcome to the Isle of Wight

Whether you’re visiting the beach, exploring historic sites or discovering more about the dinosaurs, the Isle of Wight has something to offer families of all ages. Located just a short ferry ride from Portsmouth and the south coast, a new home in the Isle of Wight could tick all the right boxes for you, whether you’re settling in the island’s towns, villages or countryside.

A quick history

The history of human settlement in the Isle of Wight dates back to Roman times, with villas found at both Newport and Brading. Carisbrooke Castle dates back to Norman times, and King Charles I was later held prisoner there in the mid-17th century.

Osborne House in East Cowes was a holiday favourite for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and thanks to its royal fans, the Isle of Wight welcomed other well-known visitors including Charles Dickens, John Keats and Alfred Lord Tennyson. The island is also home to a number of excellent dinosaur sites, including footprints at Hanover Point.

Business and industry

The Isle of Wight is home to a range of businesses spanning industries including tourism, leisure and retail. The biggest employers on the island include the Smithfield Packing Company, the Isle of Wight County School Board and the Isle of Wight Council. It’s also possible to commute to Portsmouth by ferry, where businesses include IBM United Kingdom, BVT Surface Fleet Support and Pall Europe.

Things to do in the area

The Isle of Wight is well-known for its impressive historic buildings, including Carisbrooke Castle and Queen Victoria’s holiday home, Osborne House. If you or your children are interested in dinosaurs, Dinosaur Isle and the Dinosaur Exhibition Centre are a must-visit, while other family-friendly attractions include Blackgang Chine theme park, Isle of Wight Zoo and Amazon World Zoo Park.

For adventures in the great outdoors, you don’t have to travel far. Robin Hill Country Park has thrill rides as well as expansive gardens, while the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Hamstead Heritage Coast are ideal for hiking and cycling.

Each year, the island plays host to Bestival, a popular three-day music festival at Robin Hill which attracts live acts from around the world.

Travel and commuting

If you’re travelling to and from the English mainland, you can get a ferry from Portsmouth to Fishbourne with a journey time of one hour, while the hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde takes just 10 minutes. Once you’ve reached the island, the journey from Cowes to Shanklin on the opposite coast takes around 30 minutes by car, while there are also trains connecting local towns. If you want to catch a plane, Southampton Airport is the closest major airport to the Isle of Wight.
