One step through the door of The Botanist and you can feel the romance in the air. The whimsical setting includes a domed glass ceiling and a 15-foot tree growing in the centre of the room. The menu offers a mixture of small plates and the usual burgers and pies, all of which never disappoint. The real star of the show are the gin cocktails served in a carafe – perfect for two to share.

Nestled within Newcastle’s design gallery is Artisan, an independent restaurant which endeavours to mix both food and art into a unique dining experience. After experiencing all the gallery has to offer, expect to be wowed by each artistically dresses dish. Artisan’s menu changes daily as they use seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, but you can expect the likes of breast of Northumbrian grouse and hand rolled gnocchi.

With MasterChef finalist, Dave Coulson at its helm, Peace and Loaf has set the bar high in terms of unique and inventive food. Just one glance at the tasting menu and the dishes exude humour. Expect titles such as, ‘my cod I bet me mam has seen some trotters’ and ‘jammy dodger’. Its eccentricity may not suit the pallets of some, but each dish is packed with both flavour and style.
