A quick history
Stonehouse was mentioned in the 11th century Domesday Book, referring to a manor house built of stone which is where the town’s name originates from. The town later became known for brickmaking thanks to the raw materials in the local area, with the last brickmaker closing in the 1960s. During the Second World War, Stonehouse and other towns in Gloucestershire were chosen as safe places to build factories to aid the war effort, away from the bombing.

Stonehouse is home to a number of independent shops and cafes along the high street, while there are lots of places to go shopping nearby including the farmer’s market in Stroud and the outlet mall at Gloucester Quays.
For adventures in the great outdoors, you can go for a cycle ride along the Cotswold Way, take the kids to Westonbirt Arboretum or go for a hike up to Painswick Beacon. Travel and commuting
Stonehouse is very well connected by both road and rail, with regular train services to London and the M5 motorway nearby. From Stroud, the journey to Stonehouse takes just five minutes by train or 10 minutes by car, while the journey from Gloucester takes 15 minutes by train or 25 minutes by car.
For journeys to London, you can travel by train from Stonehouse to Paddington station in just one hour 45 minutes, ideal for commuters making regular trips to the capital. When it’s time for a well-earned break, Bristol Airport is just 50 minutes away from Stonehouse by car.
