A quick history

Godalming dates back to the Saxon era, and is even mentioned in the will of King Alfred the Great in the 9th century. As one of the towns on the route between Portsmouth and London, Godalming grew over the years thanks to the travellers who visited on their travels between the two cities.

The first market was held in Godalming in the early 14th century, and the tradition continues to this day. The wool industry helped the town to become wealthy, followed by weaving, knitting, leatherwork and papermaking. In 1881, Godalming was the first town on the planet to have a public electricity supply.

Business and industry

Godalming is home to a range of small and medium sized businesses including the head office of MTI Technology, consultancy provider The Content Group, and the Aegis data centre. One of the biggest employers in the town is Waverley Borough Council. Other major employers nearby include The Royal Surrey County Hospital and the University of Surrey.

Things to do in the area

If you enjoy taking in arts and culture, pay a visit to Godalming Museum to discover local history or go and see the work on display at Surrey Guild Craft Gallery. There are also some great outdoor attractions in the town, including the National Trust’s Winkworth Arboretum where you can enjoy a walk among the beautiful trees and flowers.

Godalming is set in the middle of the Surrey countryside, and is surrounded by the South Downs National Park and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you love hiking and cycling, there are lots of options close to your new home in Godalming, including Loseley Park and Puttenham Common.

If you’re a fan of golf, there are a number of courses near to Godalming, perfect for a leisurely round on a weekend or summer’s evening. Charterhouse Golf Club, Hurtmore Golf Club, Milford Golf Club and Broadwater Park Golf Club are all just a short drive away.

Travel and commuting

Godalming train station has direct services to both Portsmouth and London, making it a popular town with commuters. The nearest major town is Guildford, 15 minutes away by car or less than 10 minutes by train, while Woking is 25 minutes away by car or 20 minutes by train.

The journey from the town to Portsmouth takes 45 minutes by car via the A3 or one hour 10 minutes by train, Brighton can be reached in one hour 15 minutes by car, and London is a one hour 10-minute drive away or 55 minutes by train.

When you’re going on holiday or taking a business trip abroad, London Heathrow Airport is just 35 minutes away by car.
