New homes in Coalville

Welcome to Coalville

Coalville was once a mining town but is now a modern vibrant place to live right at the heart of the National Forest in Leicestershire. If you want to be surrounded by countryside without compromising on first-rate amenities and good transport links, a new home in Coalville could be ideal for you.

A quick history

The history of Coalville goes back to the 1830s and the Industrial Revolution, when a small group of houses were built in the area. Although it was initially known as ‘Long Lane’, it adopted the name Coalville as a nod to the coal seams found in the local area. Coal mining in the town lasted for around 150 years, starting in the 1820s and ending in the 1980s after the collieries were closed in quick succession. Since the closure of the coal mines, Coalville has undergone regeneration and is now a vibrant and popular place to set up home.

Business and industry

Aggregate Industries, TEREX Pegson and Tulip Foods are all based in Coalville, and the town is only a short drive away from Leicester where big employers include Next PLC, Sytner Group and Caterpillar (U.K.). The town’s biggest employer is Amazon, after the opening of the company’s largest UK warehouse in the town.

Things to do in the area

There are lots of historic attractions in and around Coalville, including a number of listed museums such as the town’s clock tower. Donington le Heath Manor House was once owned by Sir Everard Digby, who was involved in the gunpowder plot, and today it’s a museum where you can learn about life in the 13th century. Ashby de la Zouch Castle is also nearby.

If you’re moving to Coalville with children, there are lots of family-friendly places in and around the town including Tropical Birdland, Oak Park Farm and the outdoor adventure park, Conkers. Other places to enjoy a breath of fresh air include Staunton Harold Reservoir, and the off-road cycle trails starting at the Hicks Lodge National Forest Cycle Centre.

The Century Theatre provides evening entertainment with lots of performances throughout the year, while Odeon Swadlincote is close-by and perfect for cinema trips with the family.

Travel and commuting

Coalville is close to the M1 at junction 22, so the town has good road links to neighbouring towns and cities. Although the train line is only used for freight, there are passenger trains from Loughborough Station just a short drive away.

Travelling by car, Coalville is 25 minutes away from both Leicester and Loughborough, 30 minutes from Derby and 35 minutes from Nottingham. Birmingham is just 45 minutes away from Coalville, travelling via the M42. To get to London, the car journey takes two hours 30 minutes, but the train from Loughborough takes just one hour 35 minutes to reach London St Pancras.

If you’re going on holiday or travelling abroad for work, East Midlands Airport is just 15 minutes away from Coalville. Birmingham Airport is also close-by.
