New homes in Dudley

Welcome to Dudley

Whether you’re visiting the zoo, discovering local history or simply enjoying some shopping, there’s plenty to see and do in the Midlands town of Dudley. With good transport links to neighbouring Birmingham and beyond, your new home in Dudley offers first-rate family attractions, all within easy reach of the UK’s biggest towns and cities.

A quick history

Dudley dates back to the Anglo-Saxon era, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book as a medium size manor. Dudley Castle was built following the Norman invasion of England, and the keep can still be seen today, although the castle was partly damaged during the English Civil War.

During the Middle Ages the town grew around Dudley castle, and eventually became a market town thanks to the coal and iron works. Although the town became poorer over the following centuries, it was reinvigorated by the Industrial Revolution, especially as transport links with other towns and cities improved.

Dudley was bombed during the Second World War, but when the war was over the town went through redevelopment, with new amenities including Merry Hill Shopping Centre and Dudley Zoo, which is built into the castle remains.

Business and industry

Although Dudley is historically a coal and limestone town, industry has evolved over the years and the town is now home to a diverse range of employers including Dudley College, Dudley Zoo, Rentokil and Sandvik. The new Enterprise Zone in Brierley Hill is also set to bring a large number of jobs to the town.

Things to do in the area

Dudley is a large town with lots to see and do, whether you love discovering local history, relaxing on the golf course or going on a family day out. The Black Country Museum is located just north of the town centre, while Merry Hill Shopping Centre is popular if you’re in need of some retail therapy.

If you’re moving to the area with children, a visit to Dudley Zoo and Castle is a must. Go on the lemur walk, spot the snow leopard and brave the reptile house before enjoying a picnic in the zoo ground. Other great family attractions in the area include Saltwells Local Nature Reserve, Baggeridge Country Park and Brockswood Animal Sanctuary.

For a leisurely round of golf, you can go and play at Dudley Golf Course, Sedgley Golf Centre or Penn Golf Club. If you prefer to watch sports instead of taking part, Dudley Town F.C., the oldest non-league club in the Midlands, play at Dell Sports Centre in Brierley Hill.

Travel and commuting

Dudley has good commuter links, with the M5 and M6 only a short drive away from the town. To get to Birmingham the car journey takes 30 minutes, while the train from Dudley Port to Birmingham New Street takes the same length of time. Wolverhampton is just 20 minutes away by car, while London can be reached in two hours 25 minutes by car or two hours 5 minutes by train from Birmingham New Street.

If you’re going on holiday or taking a business trip, Birmingham Airport is a 35-minute drive away from the town.
