New Homes in Cannock

Welcome to Cannock

Whether you’re skating at the local ice rink, exploring museums or getting out in the countryside, there’s lots to see and do close to the Staffordshire town of Cannock. Located just a short commute from Birmingham with good transport links and plenty of family-friendly attractions nearby, a new home in Cannock could be the right choice for you.

A quick history

Cannock was referred to in the Domesday Book as ‘Chenet’, with the name evolving over the centuries. The area was mainly rural until the late 19th century, when mining and other industries helped the population to rise. Mining continued until the 1960s when the local collieries were shut, and today most residents are commuters.

The town is also home to a German war cemetery, where almost 5,000 German soldiers are now buried following World War I and II.

Business and industry

Most people in Cannock commute to larger towns and cities nearby for work. Birmingham is home to the National Express headquarters, Jaguar and Mondelez International, while HomeServe UK is based in Walsall and Amazon has one of its UK sites in Rugeley.

Things to do in the area

Cannock is a small yet bustling town with a modern shopping centre, an out-of-town outlet, an ice rink and a theatre. Kids will love visiting the local trampoline park, while the German Military Cemetery is a peaceful place for an afternoon walk.

For adventures in the great outdoors, you can go hiking or cycling in Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, spot wildlife at Hednesford Hills Nature Reserve, or take the kids to Birches Valley Forest Centre. Other family friendly attractions nearby include Northycote Farm and Country Park, Chasewater Country Park and the Chasewater Railway.

If you enjoy getting active, you can go horse riding at Cannock Chase Horse Trekking centre, tackle the high ropes at Go Ape Cannock, or play a leisurely round of golf at Beau Desert Golf Club.

Travel and commuting

Cannock is well-connected by road and rail, so it’s easy to travel to nearby towns and cities. The M6 and M6 Toll are close to the town, while the local train station has frequent services to Birmingham and beyond.

From Cannock, the drive to both Wolverhampton and Telford takes 30 minutes, while Birmingham can be reached in 40 minutes by train or 35 minutes by car. If you’re travelling to London, the train journey takes two hours 15 minutes changing at Birmingham New Street, while the drive takes around two hours 35 minutes depending on traffic.

When it’s time for a well-earned holiday, you can get to Birmingham Airport in 30 minutes by car. If you want to leave the car at home, you can catch a train to Birmingham International instead.
