Make the move

The largest county in southeast England, buying a new home in Hampshire provides plenty of choice.

With everything from maritime towns and cities, to lovely market towns, the county has something for everyone.

Hampshire also has several claims to fame. Not only was it the birthplace of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force, but some of Britain’s most famous figures are from here, including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Things to see and do

A move to Hampshire will provide you with lovely countryside with two national parks to visit: the New Forest and the South Downs.

The New Forest is filled with things to do. You could explore miles of cycle tracks and spot wild ponies, have a go at sailing and windsurfing, go horse riding or play golf. There are a number of lovely villages throughout the New Forest to explore, where you’ll find great shops, tea rooms and restaurants.

The South Downs is another option for the great outdoors. Covering 1,600km2, you can hike across hills, discover ancient woodlands, visit lovely vineyards and see the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters.

Hayling Island is great for beach lovers especially in the summer months. With over 3 miles of blue flag beaches, you’ll find plenty of space to relax and enjoy the sea.

The city of Winchester is filled with attractions, along with great shopping and dining. The Winchester Military Museum, Westgate Museum and Winchester Cathedral provides years of history, while Marwell Zoo, Hollycombe Working Steam Museum and Winchester City Mill – where you can have a go at milling flour – are all further highlights.

Education

There are several primary and secondary schools in the area giving families plenty of choice. Those looking to go on to higher education in the area can choose from the University of Southampton, the University of Winchester, Southampton Solent University and the University of Portsmouth.

Transport links

Hampshire has excellent transport links by road, air or rail.

The M3 motorway connects Hampshire to London, while the M27 serves as a bypass for other regions along the south coast. Further major roads include the A3, A31 and A36.

The Wessex Main Line from Bristol to Portsmouth runs through the county, while the South West Main Line from London to Weymouth runs through Southampton and Winchester.  From Winchester, London can be reached in one hour and from Southampton in one hour 20 minutes. The Portsmouth Direct Line also runs through the county.
