Make the move

The oldest recorded town in England, Colchester in Essex, is filled with history dating back to Roman times.

Its location is just over 50 miles northeast of London, making it a popular choice for commuters, along with those who want easy access into the capital.

Things to see and do

A good place to start in Colchester is by exploring its history. The town centre has lovely architecture, while Colchester Castle is Europe’s largest Norman Keep, constructed on the foundations of Claudius.

The museum and galleries within the castle are great for all ages. Interactive displays help bring the past to life, and you can even get involved and have a go at steering a chariot or building a Norman archway.

Moving away from the past, the town has a wide range of other attractions. Set in 60 acres of parkland, Colchester Zoo will let you see over 260 different animals and numerous daily displays. Visitors will get the chance to feed giraffes and elephants, and take a ride on the ‘Lost Madagascar Express’ road train.

The Art Exchange located at the University of Essex showcases contemporary art, while the Beth Chatto Gardens offers lovely plants and flowers to see.

Colchester is a great location for those who like to explore the great outdoors. Constable Country is the ideal place for walkers offering wide open spaces, farmland, meadows and woodland. Made famous by John Constable’s paintings, the area also offers great picnic territory and an ideal spot for some time out.

You’ll find plenty of shopping options here too, where narrow streets feature designer one-off stores, alongside a great selection of restaurants and bars. High street favourites are also on offer, while a market is held every Friday and Saturday.

Colchester and its surrounding areas have several primary schools offering you plenty of choice. Colchester Royal Grammar School, The Gilberd School and Colchester County High Choice are just some of your options, while the University of Essex offers an option for those going into higher education.
