Things to see and do in Canterbury

A city packed with history and culture, spots like the Canterbury Roman Museum, Royal Museum Canterbury and the Stark Gallery are all must-sees. So too Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury Castle and the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge. More examples of the city’s stunning architecture include St Augustine’s Abbey and the Norman Staircase.

From Greyfriars Chapel, Cottages and Gardens to Trinity Chapel, the Kent Museum of Freemasonry and Westgate Towers Museum and Viewpoint, a stroll along the city walls is another must. Whether you’re staying in the city centre or heading out to beauty spots like the Hambrook Marshes, Reed Pond and Blean Woods National Nature Reserve, you can also drive north to seaside spots like Tankerton Beach in less than 20 minutes.

Education

Thanks to its excellent selection of schools, Canterbury is very family-friendly. Top schools for younger children include St Thomas’ Catholic Primary School along Military Road, which is rated as outstanding by Ofsted. St John’s CofE and St Peter’s Methodist Primary are both close to the city centre and ranked as good, while the same applies to Canterbury Academy and Barton Court Grammar. Meanwhile, Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys is graded as outstanding.

Transport links in Canterbury

The city has two train stations, Canterbury West and Canterbury East, which are actually in the north and south of the town centre respectively. Non-stop services to Faversham take just over 10 minutes, while it’s a little over 50 minutes to get to London. The A2 passes just to the south of Canterbury, enabling you to drive to Dover in just half an hour, while the M2 motorway begins just west of town.
